Basic Set-Up for Photography
Basic Setup
There are three elements to a basic studio
setup - camera - lighting - backdrop.
Camera
A digital camera with an image resolution of at least five megapixels
(5 MP) is suggested. The camera lens should have a macro capability
(able to get in close to the object being photographed) and provide
clear images with true to life color. There are a number of good
(and reasonably priced) cameras on the market. Consumer Reports
is a great resource for information. B&H Photo in New York (order
online at bhphotovideo.com) provides an outstanding selection and
has a very knowledgeable and professional staff.
Because the lens is such an important part
of your success in taking good photos, one suggestions is the Panasonic
Lumix (with Leica lens)
Lighting
A Basic Lighting setup consists of two lamps, positioned to the
left and right of the camera. Inexpensive, daylight balanced fluorescent
lights are a good choice. Click

most studios.
Backdrop
When photographing an object for auction, the background surrounding
the object should not distract the viewer; therefore, it is suggested
that a neutral color seamless backdrop be used.
Purchase a roll
of grey paper (available in all photography stores) and a stand to hang the paper roll from. There are different paper widths available;
we recommend 48". If you regularly photograph larger objects
(i.e. furniture); then a wider roll will be needed.
The basic setup is simple, drape the paper
over a table as shown in the diagram below. Place the objects to
be photographed on the tabletop and shoot.
